The Making Of The Fairy Hat

Early on, it was decided that Lily was going to be "Lily", one of Tinkerbell's friends from Pixie Hollow. A water talent fairy. My aunt had given her a set of 4 books, and one of the books was about Lily. The best part of her outfit is the gigantic sunflower hat she wears. I had the idea formulating in my mind for weeks before I gathered the materials and sat down at the machine to make it. Luckily, it turned out almost exactly as I had pictured it, and easy too!

I bought felt, pipe cleaners and a purple ribbon to keep it on her head. I cut out the petal shapes free-hand, double layered, and sewed each petal together around the edges. I then inserted a pipe cleaner down to the tip and sewed on either side to keep it in place. I finished off the petal with a few more stitching lines to make it more pleasing to the eye.

I rummaged around and found an old green t-shirt and made a cap for the base of the hat. I machine stitched the petals on all around the hat, overlapping them as I went. Next was making the green base and stem which consisted of 3 very crudely cut triangular shaped pieces all sewn together to make a cone. That part I hand stiched on over top of the petals, and twisted the top stem, stiching that together and wrapping it in pipe cleaner for extra reinforcement.

When I was finished, I could hardly believe how quickly I did it, and how well it turned out. amazing really.

someone suggested making a series of flower hats for dress-up. It would be fun to make a pink one with rounded edges. maybe someday.
